Who doesn’t like Disneyland?  If you raised your hand, I’m not sure that I want to know you. I’m just joking…well, kind of.  But seriously, I love Disney theme parks. When someone says, “I love foreign travel”, I say “ya, me too.  I love that I can go to World Showcase at EPCOT and travel to 12 different countries in one afternoon.”  I’m just joking again….or am I?   Reality is grossly overrated and I like to be immersed in fantastic lands of imagination, fun rides and tasty eats.

Why the heck would I want to find the healthy foods at the Happiest Place on Earth?  Shouldn’t I be writing a post mapping out each and every churro cart location?  People don’t go to Disney to eat healthy food and calories don’t count at Disney, right?  🙂  Part of the fun is getting an ice cream bar in the shape of Mickey Mouse and trying all of the new holiday treats.

However, Annual Passholders, are at Disneyland so much and sometimes don’t want to indulge as often.  On the occasions when I spend all day at the park, I find that if I intersperse some more balanced options between my treats, I feel better and have more sustained energy to keep trekking until night time.  Disneyland actually has quite a few options that lean towards the healthy side AND look really delicious.

I am not making my determinations based on calories because the calories aren’t posted.  But, calories don’t necesarily indicate the healthfulness of food anyways.  Here are just a few points that I’m looking for when I don’t have any information other than a menu description:

  1.  Seems to be a balance of  protein, carbs and fat
  2.  Isn’t an overly sugary item
  3. Contains vegetables, and/or
  4. Mostly made up of an obviously healthy item (i.e. an apple)

So here’s how we’re going to do this in order to avoid a 20,000 word blog post.  Part 1 post is all about Disneyland and Disney California Adventure snacks. Part 2 will cover cafes and restaurants at Disneyland and Part 3 will cover Disney’s California Adventure.  An overview of the Mickey Check program will also be thrown in there in Post 2.

Just want to let you know that I sacrificed an entire 5 hours of not going on rides to do my “research”.  Just sayin. 🙂

Disclaimer:  Items offered can change at any time and are subject to availability. I did my initial “research” Labor Day weekend and when I went back the following week, I noticed that a few seasonal items were no longer there.

Disneyland

Main Street

Main Street Fruit Cart (right outside of Starbucks)

  • Mango slices with Tajin seasoning (Tajin is a chile lime seasoning that is amazing on fruit and Dole Whips!)
  • Whole apples, bananas, oranges, and red grapes
  • Fresh pineapple spears and watermelon slices
  • Gogo Squeeze  AppleApple applesauce pouch
  • Freeze dried apple crisps
  • Giant pickles   (if you’re watching your sodium intake due to hypertension, etc, this is probably not the best option for you.)
  • Mini Babybel cheese wheels
  • Sabra hummus with pretzels

Healthy Snacks at Disneyland

Starbucks

It was way too crowded in here and since I wasn’t ordering anything, I didn’t want to get in line to get a closer look.  I’ll update this venue on one of my future trips.

Gibson Girl Ice Cream

  • Rather than the massive sundaes, go for a scoop of ice cream in a cup
  • If you need to avoid added sugars, no sugar added butter pecan is offered
  • They also have strawberry fruit bars if you’re in the mood for a refreshing popsicle treat
  • All ice cream is Dreyer’s brand

Penny Arcade

I found these items accidentally while strolling through this candy shop.  They’re not in an obvious place, so keep your eyes peeled.

Variety of trail mixes including :

  • Mountain Mambo Seed & Fruit Mix – sunflower seeds, pepitas, raisins, apples, chocolate chips and cranberries
  • Roasted Nut Mix – cashews, almonds, peanuts and macademia nuts  **better option
  • Nature’s Trail Mix – sunflower seeds, raisins, pepitas, almonds and cashews **better option
  • Fruit & Nut Mix – cranberries, almonds, banana chips, pineapple, papaya, raisins and coconut
  • Veggie chips

Healthy Snacks at Disneyland

Treat that seems like it should be healthy, but it’s really not:  I was super excited to see dark chocolate covered almonds!  A sweet treat with healthy fats.  However, my excitement turned to disappointment when I read the phrase “artificially flavored” below the title.  In addition to the sugar in the chocolate which is expected, the product also has artificial flavoring, additional sugar, corn syrup, and confectioner’s glaze.  Boo! Too bad.

Tomorrowland Fruit Cart (across from Star Traders)

Fantasyland Fruit Cart (across from Red Rose Tavern)

Same items as the Main Street Fruit Cart, but with the addition of:

Fun post and so many great healthier options! I’ll admit to NOT choosing them since I usually only go to Disneyland once per year. I have this strange affinity for the sour balls you can get at the candy store on Main Street. The ONLY place I ever buy them is at Disneyland 🙂

No shame in that! I definitely like my Disney treats too!
